As someone who has played Project Sekai since its release, being presented a full animated length movie is like a love letter from the developer for us, the players. As someone who is emotionally attached to many characters to a certain point, every single scene gave me goosebumps.
In-game, these characters can only move in live2d and awkward 3d models, but in the movie they show you lots of parts of them you’d normally won’t be able to see in the game due to the nature of the visual novel storytelling style.
By the way, I (properly) watched the movie twice: one was the regular screening. The second time was after Tokyo Sekai Live, which was a cheering screening where you were allowed to bring penlights and cheer during the movie. Because everyone in the theater still got the live euphoria, everyone was in high tension (despite it was a late night screening) and it was the most fun thing I experienced in a theater.
Spoiler ahead.
In the movie, they show you how they spawn in Sekai, how MMJ practices, the process of Niigo’s song making, how WxS practiced for their upcoming show, how VBS Miku ruins Meiko’s dough, and most importantly, how would each units performing their music.
This movie might not good plot-wise, but it makes me emotional to see the game I like has come to this point. Its a rare moment for me
Also I saw this on Twitter but someone mentioned the movie is more a “Hatsune Miku movie” than a “Project Sekai movie” which is true so I think even pure Miku fan will enjoy this.
